Europe 2008 - Our Grand Tour - Ireland

August 2, 2008, Mulranny, Ireland…We made it! It was an unbelievably easy, uneventful flight to Dublin. No, really. The car rental experience was touch-and-go but Tom pulled through in the end without hurting the agent and we set out for the west coast with a 5 hour drive on the narrow, rural roads for which Ireland is famous. With no sleep under his belt, two-way, narrow, rock-lined roads and a minimum 120 km/h, Tom had a meltdown so I had to take the wheel. Sure it may have been all of 15 minutes most of which was in stand-still traffic, but Tom got his 90 second nap and was back behind the wheel speeding toward our home on the North Atlantic and I saved the day. Now then, after a very restful night of sleep, here I sit, looking out at the calm waters of Clew Bay, Croagh Patrick in the distance, a warm cup o’ joe in hand, writing this journal.

Great images - all light and color. It's a real pleasure to see your visions, sharing the magic of Eire. Delightful!

"To travel is better than to arrive."
MMMM. Blood sausauge. I would have had to have at least one whole bottle of wine before I could eat that. Sounds like your having a wonderful holiday though. And Tom, what would he do without you? He's so lucky to have you. Right? Tell him I say, "Dia duit"?

Oh-I-know.
As I read your words and view your sights, it makes me see how great things are. The two of you still amaze me, always making me smile. We miss you!
Hey John,

Dia is Muire duit

Tom
I look forward to reading about your adventures as I sit at my desk in NJ (supposed to be working). I love that you share these trips with all of us with your whimsical writing... I can practically taste those biscuits and cream and wine! yum. the photos are truly beautiful - the one of Tom in the pub is particularly striking - how you caught the light and the mood of the place and all... too bad about the rain, though. No wonder so many Irish came to the US : )
oh my goodness, I am enraptured. the climb up C.P was indeed a feat. the pix
are gorgeous. thanks for sharing. and Westport sounds delightful.
this has been so much fun to read about... what a great and relaxing vacation you guys are on! it makes me want to go to ireland asap! hope you guys enjoy the rest of your stay and i love all the wonderful pictures you have put up!

Dani
I would take the description "that American couple"as good....but how will those of us who travel to Ireland
after you, ever live up to your exploits and derring do?? impossible! ;>}
Oh, I know!
Hi guys,
hope you don't mind...I have a question... how do most of the people in this area make a living? Is it tourism or farming? Everything looks so quaint and simple, I can't help but wonder how the day to day lives of the natives differ from our own.

(August 24, 2008) 30 MPH gale winds and a 2 hour finish? Be honest-did Tom write this? It really sounds like one of his tall stories. Were ther any leprecauns or fairies in there somewhere?
I thought all Irish were nice...what a mean director! but I am glad you did your own race.
I liked that you used the "I came all the way from Phoenix" line... even though it did not impress him.
I had a line I used a few times and it got me in practically anyplace....
"I came all the way from Seattle and I am a widow"....nobody argued with that! ;>}
Hello to you two!

Thought I would let you know of a terrible storm we had hit the great Phoenix area. The golf course across the street has trees down every where. Lots of electric poles down in the encanto area. Where Bobbie lives they will not have electric until Tuesday. Just thought I would pass this on not to cause stress and worry, but thought you might want to be aware. The Credit Union was without power until 2, so we have decided to open for our members on Saturday.

Again I am so happy to see such wonderful pictures that you have provided us to see. WOW how I wish we were there. Talk to you soon ..............we miss yo and the great fisherman!

Colleen
